Before their conversion to Christianity, the Anglo-Saxons followed the same pagan religion as the other early Germanic peoples, worshipping a group of gods that included Woden (aka Odin, Wotan), his wife Friga, Thunor (Thor), and Tiw. The traditonal date for the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons in what had been Roman Britain is A.D. 449, and the first Christian missionaries arrived at Canterbury in 597. The story goes that Pope Gregory I, seeing some handsome blond boys in the Roman slave market, asked who they were and, when he was told that they were Angles, replied, "Non Angli sed angeli [not Angles but angels]." When he learned that they were still pagans, he immediately resolved to send missionaries to them. Those missionaries had rapid success, and most of the Anglo-Saxons had converted within a couple of generations. (I am deliberately not saying anything about the Celtic Church or the Synod of Whitby, but if you want to know, just ask. :) )

The Angles and the Saxons were tribes that settled England -- not a religion.
This is a kid's page, but pretty good to start you out:
