Georges De La Tour (1593-1652) is best known for his candlelit subjects with religious themes. His paintings depict ordinary people painted realistically and have a monumental simplicity and stillness. Most of his paintings show indoor scenes lit only by candle or torch light. His human figures emerge out of the darkness. His paintings are very realistic and dramatic. He was influenced by the chiaroscuro of the Italian painter Caravaggio. A good example of his style is his "St. Joseph the Carpenter" in which the figures are lit by a candle held by a child.
