So, I'm in 8th Grade and we're working on finding percents, my math teacher gave us homework to work on over our long Thanksgiving Break but I don't really understand how to do these, some examples of what we're doing are:

1. 1% of 127
2. 5% of 75
3. 50% of 84

How can you figure these out using a calculator? (Yes, we are allowed those.) Thanks in advance for any and all helpful hints as to how I can do these problems. Have a nice night! : )

"x" percent of "y" means:

Move the decimal point to the left of "x" to places and multiply it by "y".

For example 15% of 300 means:
0.15 X 300 = 45.0

Also, whenever you find the word "of" in a word problem, it means multiplication is involved.

Just remember of means to multiply. So 1% of 127 is 1% x 127. To figure out how to convert percent to decimal is this: You know that 1 is really 1.0.....right? To find the decimal you move the period two to the left. To remember how many you move, it is the number of the circles in the % sign. Goofy I know, but my 7th grade teacher told me that, and I still remember it 25 years later.

So the answer is .0010 x 127.

Good Luck!

An easy way to do this is to divide the number by 100, ex: 127/100 = 1.27 Then multiply by the number in front of the % sign. Ex: 1 * 1.27 = 1.27

1% of 127 = 1.27
5% of 75 = 3.75
50% of 84 = 42

First of all, on a calculator, .01 = 1%. So, multiply 127 x .01 =1.27... 75 x .05=3.75.... 84 x .50= 42... Just remember to put the decimal in the right place and you'll be set!!! Good Luck!!!

If you change the percent to a decimal and then multiple it by the number you will have your answer.

Example:
1% would be changed to .01, to change to a decimal you always move the decimal point 2 places to the left.
now multiple it with the 127

127 x .01 = 1.27

I hope this helped. Have a great night yourself!!!
