There is potential energy in any object that is raised above the surface of the earth. When you drop the object, the potential energy is quickly converted into kinetic energy. Just before impact, all of the potential energy has been converted to kinetic energy. When it hits the ground, the kinetic energy is converted to heat energy.

There is potential energy in the fuel that you add to your car. When you start it, this potential energy is converted into the kinetic energy of the pistons, the gears, and eventually the entire vehicle.

The same is true of a spacecraft. There is plenty of potential energy in the fuel, and it is converted to lots of kinetic energy at launch.

For example everybody has potential energy stored inside of them when they are at rest, when you start to move that potential energy is converted into kinetic energy. Same with a ball at rest, it has potential energy but when it starts to roll or bounce that energy is converted to k.e.
