I've always had that thought in my mind before too. Especially during my AP World History class, I'm always thinking "Wow, i wish i was there to see that" or "Why doesn't anything like that happen now?". Now that i think about it, living in a past time period grants you more freedom. There were no laws that abided u unless you lived under a Manorial system; you could visit many places and have a very adventureous life unlike today in which were stuck either in a class room or an office like half of the day. On the other hand it would be bad to live in the past due to many diseases that were present and very few cures available at the time. In conclusion, living in the past would give you more freedom but you would most likely not be able to live a long life as you are able to today and be able to take advantage of the many technological advances available today either.

Oh yes. ^_^ I *know* I was born in the wrong decade if not the wrong century. But there's a catch to all this: to really get things right, if you really wanted to *fully live* in a decade, you'd have to be born some 20 years earlier so you could be an *adult* in that decade of choice. Assuming you wanted to be that, *then*. ^_^ This is the problem.

If you want to be an adult, in your early 20s let's say, in the 1950s, that means you would have had to been born in the 1930s, during the Great Depression, one of the suckiest times ever. Just as an example. This doesn't even go into times of warfare and crap.

So....the temptation on my part is to not screw things up too much. ^_^ I kind of like being a bit of a city boy and living in civilized times, thank you. So....

--If I were born 10 years earlier, that would have been peachy. 1956 instead of 1966. Then my earliest memories as an infant would have been of Poodle skirts, I'd be too young as a kid to ruin myself on drugs in the 60s, I'd be a teenager in the 1970s (can you say "That 70s Show"?), a grown man in the 1980s....things would have been in synch, I would have had the time of my life at *all the times* of my life....at least up until 2001, but by then, I could consider early retirement, say by 2010 or 2015.

--If I had been born ten years later....oh well, then things might have sucked worse for me early on, but I'd still be *ten years* younger right now, which isn't all bad. ^_^

--But on the other hand...if I didn't want to be such a stick in the mud....being a citizen of the Roman Republic or Empire, in the stable *middle* of each time, living *in Rome*, might have been cool too. ^_^

--And well....I really do think sometimes that I was born 50 years or so too soon, that I really should be living in the mid 21st or 22nd centuries (2050 to 2150, let's say), but...that's just a hunch. -_- I don't *know*, outside of hunches, whether life would be any better for me, worse for me, or whatever.

All I do know is that the *start* of any given century tends to suck. That's the historical trend. It was true at least going from 1799 to the early, single-digit 1800s, true going from 1899 to the early, single-digit 1900s. And well, you tell me, is the 21st century, the single-digit 2000s, a bit of a letdown so far? (understatement)

Ok then. ^_^ But what can you do? We're here now, aren't we? Got to be *some* reason for that....Good Question!

I think I should've been born in the late 1800s or early 1900s. Because I seem to like vintage stuff a lot and I love their 'entertainment' lifestyles (playing music in the home, whole families being musicians, friends coming over to stay overnight and chat, attending concerts, etc.). And I love the western music of that period too. I'm a classical musician...maybe that's why.

THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS "back in the day when life was simple, when families were close, etc." I mean back in the day women couldn't vote, Hitler tried to take over the world, blacks were slaves, etc. As much as I love history and the ancient past, I wouldn't want to live in it at all. I'd rather live in the far future, where science and medicine are more advanced.
