It is not possible because the president must lead the nation and not be exposed to danger in times of war. Unlike the UK where the royal family is required to send their members of the family to war in support of their country's policy.

A lot of Presidents that wouldn't be so quick to invade a country or go to war over something. I think the talking aspect would be worked on a lot harder.

General Washington was not the head of our government at the same time that he was leading troops.
It is impractical to do both jobs.
