Humans and apes technically have very similar DNA (approx. 95% ) so they CAN theoretically produce offspring.
This situation is similar to the Horse/Donkey offspring, a Mule, where an offspring is produced, but is sterile (this is due to it having an uneven number of chromosomes) so unable to procreate itself.

For humans and apes, there would be a huge scope for genetic problems. An uneven number of chromosomes creates genetic problems like Downs Syndrome. Humans have one less Chromosome than Apes.

There have been rumours of 'Humanzees' created, but these are unsubstantiated.

I BELIEF IN THE MISCONCEPTION OF THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION WHICH EXPLAINS THAT THE TWO SPECIES HAVE A COMMON ANCESTORS. SINCE CHIMPANZE, GORILLA, ORANGUTANS & BABOONS ALL HAVE 24 PAIRS OF CHROMOSOMES & HUMAN WITH 23 PAIRS, SO HYBRIDIZATION WOULD BE SO DIFFICULT & THERE ARE NO EVIDENCES CONCERNING THE SUCCESS OF FUSION OF GAMETES OF AN APE WITH HUMAN TO PRODUCE OFFSPRING.
IN CASE THAT THEY HAD A COMMON ANCESTORS, THEY SHOULD HAD BEEN WITH THE SAME NUMBER OF CHROMOSOMES IN THE PAST AND ANY CHANGE IN THE CHROMOSOMES NUMBER WILL LEADS T O DANGEROUS CHANGE IN THE ORGANISMS KNOWN AS MUTATION. AS BOTH ARE NORMAL IN THEIR PHYSIOLOGICAL BEHAVIOURS AS ANIMALS MUTATION IS IMPORPABLE.
THERE ARE ANOTHER FACTORS REQUIRED FOR ZYGOTES TO SETTLE IN THE UTERUS TO GROW SUCH AS TEMPERATURE OF THE BODY, ENZYMES, BLOOD GROUPS, ANTIGEN/ANTIBODY REACTION AFFECT THE STABILITY OF THE ZYGOTE, IMMUNE SYSTEM ...ETC.
SO NO WAY TO PRODUCE OFFSPRING BUT TO MATE (YES ........?????? - IAM SO SORRY FOR MY LAST WORDS REGARDING MATING)

I will disagree with every other answer you have received and say, "Yes, as long as the ape is of the same species."

(Humans are apes as are gorillas, orangatans, chimpanzees and bonobos)
