By the time you graduate from a school of journalism the NY Times will be a considerably smaller newspaper, with a much smaller staff. They are hemorrhaging money and have even reduced the physical size of the paper in the past few months.
You would be better off with a news service or one of the papers in the growing Southeast and Southwest.

Ok firstly get as much experience as you can writing everywhere. College and local papers are good, even offer to do it for free at first. The byline and copy of the article are worth it! Email or write to some journalists ask them for advice and maybe send a sample of your work. Take on board what they say and thank them for their time and help no matter what. Just try to get your name about and learn as much as you can from everyone.

Get a black book and keep names, addresses and phone numbers and email addresses for everyone you talk to. This will be so useful later if you need to build a network and want to get back in touch and find further things out.

After graduating college, you should create a resume and portfolio of prior journalistic works. Submit these two things, along with a cover letter, to the human resource department of the New York Times.
