The maximum noise emission standards for all type of motor vehicles and two wheelers, ranges from 79 to 92 decibel (dBA), depending on the type and age of the vehicle.
However, a replacement exhaust system fitted to a bike registered BEFORE January 1st, 1985, must simply have the B.S.A.U. 193 stamp on it.

As far as I'm led to believe is that if its the standard equipment for that machine thats good enough, as the laws change so frequently they cant expect everyone to keep modifying there vehicles to suit ever changing laws

that's not exactly true (take seat belts) Basically your exhaust has to comply to a BS standard in the UK. or an equivalent standard anywhere across the EU. once it has complied to one then it is covered across the whole of Europe even if it does not comply to the country of residence IE BS and TV in Germany, very strict.
