I wrote stain/varnish question abt. 40 min ago & got no answers so I'm trying once more. Any preggo women out there been around the smell of stain & varnish, like if someone was working on a floor and had to obviously let it dry and it smelled bad. I have a window cracked & door closed. It smells yucky & I was wondering if you thought it could harm me? I am going to doc tomorrow anyway. I'll ask then but any info would be great.

I can't leave the house for the night. Also,it's in the baby's room & door is closed & I cracked the window & I put a fan on in there. The room is not even close to being done so I'm assuming I'm going to be smelling a lot more of this.

Well I called Poison Control. My throat was getting really irritated so I told them abt. it. They told me to leave for the night so I am at my parents' house. Needless to say there will be no more staining til we can figure something out.
Thanks for your answers thus far!

I think you made the right decision by staying somewhere else for the night. I recently bought an unfinished shelf to hang in our kitchen, and a can of stain for it. Upon reading the back of the can, there were warnings all over it in bold type about birth defects. (These were, however, related to handling the product, not breathing the fumes.) I had my dad stain the shelf for me at his house.
A few hours of exposure to strong fumes from these substances aren't likely to have an effect on your baby. You were likely the recipient of ill effects with the sore throat it caused you. Senses are heightened during pregnancy, and you may well have a more pronounced reaction to the fumes while you're pregnant than when you're not. Ask your doctor for sure (there aren't any stupid questions concerning pregnancy!), but I am almost certain you and baby will be just fine. Good luck and congrats!

You're likely going to be fine. Just make sure the room is well-ventilated. You can't avoid every noxious fume when you're pregnant.
Also, keep in mind that your baby is FULLY developed right now, it's just small. Fumes are much more dangerous in the first trimester, when a new system is being developed every day. (For example, you maybe wouldn't want to smell fumes the day the baby's spine or kidneys are developing - as if that could be tracked.) Take comfort in knowing that your baby has already been made and is developed - it just needs to grow, and what you're smelling will likely not hinder that.

We refinished our wood floors when I was barely pregnant. I didn't even know yet. My son is fine. My cousin painted and stripped paint and varnished things her entire pregnancy, and the baby was fine. Ask your dr. but for sure make sure there is good air circulation and go outside so you can take a breath of fresh air frequently.

As long as the windows are open to get fresh air it is ok. You are problably just sensitive to the smell because you ARE pregnant. I was like that with the smell of Shell gas. It made me turn green. Even now, 3 years later it about makes me sick.

You definately should not be around too much of that smell. It surely isn't good for you, but I don't think it will harm the baby. Your right, ask the doctor.

If you are worried that it may harm your baby, leave the house and sleep somewhere else tonight. Your first priority is that baby! Better to be called overprotective and have a healthy baby!

read the label on the can of varnish, it usually states how to dry and if inhaling can cause any problems.
