WD-40 will help, but it can be messy.

I prefer to store mine in large (gallon size or so) ziplock bags, and toss in a silica gel pack, to keep them dry in the enlosed space. Always wipe the tool down before putting away in storage.

You can find the ziplock bags at any department or grocery store.

An online search for "Desiccant" will yield a lot of sources for the silica gel inserts.. here is a link to just one of them - http://www.silicagelpackets.com/

The silica gel helps remove any moisture in the space it is tossed into. Some are in a reusable form.

Good Luck

Wd-40 isn't long lasting, used motor oil is a known carcinogenic. There are a number of products that can be sprayed on or dipped that will give an impervious coating that will not get on everything when you need to use the tool. Depends on what the tools are being used for. Mechanical repairs, or wood working? Wood will absorb anything you put on the tools and may ruin your project. Check with products on the net.

When I lived in western oregon I used to have to spray all my tools or they would rust. I used a silicone spray or would rub motor oil if I could not find my silicone spray.

I am in the military and before storing tools or weapons during cold or damp seasons we always coat them with a product we commonly refer to as CLP.

The time honored method is to rub them with a rag containing motor oil, garages still do it this way and they do it with used oil, probably because it's free.
