I've been answering some questions on evolution and some of the other answers are so amazingly ignorant of the facts that it is downright pathetic. Then, if you try to politely steer people to the websites that explain why what you are saying really is true, these people just simply refuse to even look because they seem to have the attitude "don't confuse me with the facts - I've already made up my mind". The level of scientific and mathematical ignorance to me is frightening - are there really people that stupid that they can't see the gigantic holes in their reasoning and so smug that they think they are right without ever once bothering to question it? Unfortunately the answer seems to be "yes", but I'm wondering if there's anything the rest of us can do to defeat this ignorance... permanently. Any suggestions as to how to get rid of this absurd overconfidence in what is clearly incorrect or am I barking at the moon?

Willful ignorance IMHO is worse because even though it's smack in their face... by choice the person is totally oblivious to reality.

Now with respect to Evolution ... the beauty of humanity is those who believe in God, Ala The Koran, Buddha and other higher beings have the right to believe what they want. Just as if said you believe strictly in Scientific evidence of man descending from the ape species.

You need to realize their are many people who find great comfort in knowing their is something beyond this earth once we die. It's having Faith even though they have never seen it. Wheither they are right or wrong is for the individual to decide. What is sad for all of mankind is when certain individuals decide to rid the world of a particiular religion, culture or set of people.

Willful ignorance is worse. It's annoying and done on purpose. One example, this 10th grade girl in my chemistry class is willfully ignorant. There's no way she could be as ignorant as she pretends to be. She's this preppy, rich, stuck-up girl who craves attention. The most annoying thing she said to me when I told her she should wear sunscreen because of skin cancer (we get a lot of sun here) was "does skin cancer mess up your skin". And it's CHEMISTRY class (we had already covered the importance of the ozone layer).
Then another time the teacher got done explaining the bunsen burner and we has just used it. Later on the teacher was asking about bunsen burners and the girl was like "what's a bunsen burner".
Another girl I know, doesn't believe in evolution (I think it was too over her head so she just said she doesn't believe in it, she's Episcopalian btw). A few days ago I read a story about a doctor who implanted a babboon heart into a baby and the baby died. When the doctor was asked about why he chose a babboon because they aren't as close to us genetically, he responded "I don't believe in evolution". Evolution is as real as stupidity (willful or otherwise) is in this world. It annoys me when people choose faith over reason, because God more than likely made evolution. Sorry for the long post.

lack of understanding can't bring about willful push aside of the info, yet any incorrect way around is amazingly achievable. it somewhat is complicated responsible somebody for lack of understanding, nonetheless somebody who willfully push aside a actuality is totally this individual's fault. whilst those persons who push aside the info are going to tell the info ot different persons, possibly the youngsters of the subsequent technology, they're gonna replace the story, in a unsleeping or subconscious way, so as that the learner gets those info from a individual who's amazingly biased, and subsequently be partly ignorant, that's faulty too when you consider which you in user-friendly terms get one ingredient of the story. What may well be performed approximately this? regrettably, not very plenty. this way of individual, very possibly to be very obdurate. All we are in a position to do is repeat, repeat, repeat and want they attain a ingredient so as that they are in a position to't deny the info. lack of understanding can be replaced, nonetheless, with the help of separation of church and state. enable's win the battles one with the help of one i think.

Your barking at the moon. It would be impossible to try and defeat willful ignorance. Willful ignorance seems to be 'bliss'...

willful ignorance is worse but a lot of people are stubborn and ur going to have to try really hard to change their minds. its like how some people still dont believe global warming is really happening and we are speeding it up even though there is a lot of evidence behind it.
