people are always talking about how heavy metal is so evil and satanic, when i tell them i think that its pretty rad, they go insane and think im some kind of satanist. But hip/hop is SO much worse, but they are fine with it! why is this?

Most of it is just stereotyping and ignorance.
And currently hiphop is the mainstream thing that everyone likes at the time.
Every person I know that likes rap/Hiphop can only name one metal band...SLAYER, and slayer had a satanic message to it, so all the dumbasses stereotype all metal into that.
I personally I'm one of 2 people in my school that likes metal, and I'm cool with it, cuz I know I have the better half of the deal.

I think its because Heavy metal is associated with Satan and evil. When you take a first look at a heavy metal band they look satanist, but most people are too ignorant to see past the first impression and see that almost all of them aren't.
Hip/hop and rap doesn't have the image problem. People don't listen to the words coming out of their mouth because most of it you can't understand. They just see that they aren't dressing up weird(although i think they are) and differently and they think that they are ok.

People are ignorant and metal is not accepted by the mainstream music media and is labeled as "the devils music" or "music to worship the devil". Yes hip hop is much much much worse and not to mention is corrupting society. Not to mention rap. Surprisingly not many metal fans become criminals, most lead healthy,productive lives.
Its the image on what puts these stereotypes. People think metal is satanic because by the way the band members look but would rather listen to hip hop because people think they do not dress "weird" although I think they dress ridiculous with clothes 10x bigger than what their normal clothing size fits them.
What people think...
Metal image = Scary (thinking its all about Satan and is music that will corrupt the mind)
Hip Hop & Rap image = cool and hip (thinking its good music and harmless to)
RESULTS:
Metal fans = most do not become criminals and lead healthy live
Hip Hop/Rap fans = most become criminals from going to jail by selling illegal drugs, representing the hood or w/e, not to mention a lot of gang wars etc, and senseless fights just for "Fun" of thinking its cool to represent the "street gheto life"

Heavy metal isn't evil and satanic. Few bands write satanic lyrics. It's just a stereotype.
Hip hop has a lot of sexual references though, but it's generally modern hip hop.

its the screwed up times,people not all but alot of them listen to music without substance,I listened to heavy metal in the 1970's and in the 1980's,some of it still kicks *** after 30 years some,was hype:Iron Maiden,priest,old OZZY:Sabbeth and Randy rhoads era was cool,scorpions had some cool heavy stuff,Van Halen,ect.,you may be ahead of the pack be there done that,your eyes may be fine tuned as well.Keep the faith!!

Because most people dont know anyything about metal. There are the crazy bands that are somewhat satanic, but thats not how they all are. I listen to metal and I love it, but I believe in God. Its like people are afraid of it and thats because they are misinformed. When people who dont listen to metal think about it, they automatically think of something like Marylin Manson who I have to agree is a little strange, but w/e. Who cares what eveyone else thinks as long as you are listening to what makes you happy and what you like.

There are many metal bands who object satanism, people who take Slayers childish satanism are stupid. Yes there are satanic metal bands but half are for publicity. Im christian and I love metal. Rap with it's impressionable lyrics is more evil than metal if you ask me.

they are fine with hip hop because they probably don't listen to it... the media just tell them that it's good. people tell me the same thing all the time about my music.

It's just stereotyping. Society's been doing it for thousands of years. It's just a way of classifying a culture/sub-culture without educating yourself on that culture/sub-culture. Yes it's frustrating and completely moronic, but that's just the way it goes in a society ruled by a herd mentality.

People who feel that metal only has that kind of dark imagery are ignorant. Like Recommendations said, it's a stereotype.
Just like saying that all rap music is only gangsta references and misogyny is also a stereotype.
Edit: wow...and I see those who buy into one or both of those stereotypes have brought out the thumbs-down! :)
