the answer is humans. but for those of you that can't get the idea of that. I'll go for second place winners also.

1. humans (land)

2. dolphins (sea)

3. the crow (air)

ONE MORE THING when I post the sources I don't include all of what it may say because some of it is off topic and for you dolphin fans there is a darker side to them.

Sorry, Holly...you're the one who's mistaken. Humans are indeed animals. Our scientific name is Homo sapiens. We are a member of the family Hominidae, which includes humans, chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. The family Hominidae is in turn part of the order Primates, which includes hominids, but also lemurs and monkeys. The primates are in turn part of the class Mammalia, which also includes dogs, cats, cows, horses, duck-billed platypuses, and so on. Mammals in turn belong to the phylum Chordata, which also includes birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and any other animal with a dorsal nerve cord. And finally, all chordates are members of kingdom *drum roll* Animalia. So you see, Holly, humans are biologically animals in every way, shape, and form. The only way you could separate humans from other animals is philosophically, but if you'll look up at the title of this section, it's SCIENCE & Mathematics, NOT Philosophy. So I would keep that in mind the next time you feel the need to call somebody ignorant, when they've made the absolutely correct assertion that humans are the most intelligent animals. At least, we are by any definition of intelligence yet devised. Good luck.

As to the original question...well, I hope I've made my position clear. The most intelligent animal is in fact the human animal. The most intelligent NON-human animal would probably be another hominid, the chimpanzee. After that, gorillas or orangutans. Sorry, nature-lovers, but the dolphin probably comes in after all of the primates in terms of overall intelligence, followed by elephants and pigs.

brain size to body mass ratio (known as the Encephalization Quotient ) is what determines whether we have exceptional intelligence or not. Humans, chimpanzees, whales, dolphins and some parrots meet this criterion. A chart is referenced below.

If I ask if my cats have strategy, I have to answer yes. We humans are special, but probably not as smart as we think, compared to the other animals.
