can someone recommend some nice cheap safe areas to look for houseshares. needs to be max 30 mins commute to west india quay on the dlr?

That gives you a fairly wide area into East London/Essex. Anywhere on the railway line from Stratford to Romford would be accessible. Ilford is probably the best value.

You might look at Surrey Quays on the south side of the river, pretty short trip from Canada Water to Canary Wharf on the Jubilee line.
Lots of new houses going up and quite a few seem to have been bought to let. Even so you won't see much or any change form £500 per month
