Tony Williams..Hired by Miles Davis at 17 years old. One of the first Jazz/rock fusion groups The Tony Williams Life time of which the Creams Bass Player Jack Bruce held down the bass chair and John McLaughlin (Mahavishna orchestra) the guitarist. Tony was an innovator.. Do a google search on an hour with Tony Williams where he does a drum clinic like in the early 80"s and you will see what all the drummers of today are trying to do, only Tony does it better, back 30 years ago Guarantied he could do any one of those drummers gig prob better then them, and guaranteed very few of those mentioned could do his gig's, and no way they could do it better. Either Steve Smith or Virgil dante or Vinnie caliuta could do Tony's gig's mainly because they watched and studiec the master at work But I doubt if they could do it as well as tony

Every drummer has their own plus and minus points, and it's an impossible question to answer. My favourite drummers - because they both show incredible dedication to the instrument, unbelievable skill, and a very very high level of musicianship - are Steve Smith, and Virgil Donati. Can't believe neither of them have been mentioned yet!
