no, I meant beta fish breath from the air you idiot don't answer if you don't know that much.

the fireplace is a gas thing so it doesn't have smoke, and on top doesn't get hot. my dad gave him a thermometer and the temp was usually about 78f, is that too hot because someone said that was good.

this was his set up
a big bowl with a bunch of pennies on the bottom instead of rocks. he was green and my mom cleaned his bowl once a week.

All animals need oxygen. DUH.

Well it's pretty obvious any fish you buy would die if you think that bettas don't need oxygen and a fireplace mantle is a good place for him to live. He probably died from shock/terrible water conditions that you never bothered to keep in check.

By 'one month old' I assume you mean you bought him one month ago. Most bettas sold in stores are already past their breeding prime so he was already 1-2 years old.

All fish environments need the following things to at least pass as decent:

Heater
Pump
Gravel
Plants
Cleaning regimin
Appropriate food
Stable temperature (i.e. no drafts.......fireplace=drafts)

There are more things to consider. A betta is not 'just a fish'. Please research the next fish you buy before you doom it to death by not knowing the facts.

First off, Bettas do need oxygen. They are part of a group of fish called Labrynth Fish which breathe air from the surface as well as from their gills. All fish breathe oxygen, they filter it out of the water using their gills. Search it on google.

As for your Betta's cause of death, I'd say that the pennies killed the fish by leaking copper into the water. Hard metals can be fatal to fish, and that amount of copper can kill a fish very quickly. Sorry about your loss.

I think that definately the pennies killed him as well as little water maintanance
as for a betta not needing oxygen, hmm very interesting
hell yes, every living creature needs oxygen
but here is an article for you to read up on which includes the proper habitat as well as the right care for a betta

Hope that helps
Good luck

well if he was on top of your fire place he couldve overheated... and if he was young that was probly the most realistic answer...
