I have DSL through Verizon and recently haven't been able to connect to the internet (using someone elses computer now). My modem lights up and trys to connect but connection always fails. I have and old computer with Windows 98 (yeah, time for an upgrade, I know). So my question is... is it my computer or the modem. What if I reinstall windows, will that help? Any ideas?

I have been using DSL on the computer for months now, so I know the computer can handle it, it is just recently that it will not connect.

Well if it was working before, meaning if it was working with Verizon it's not your computer. If it wasn't it's your computer, since it does need a upgrade. Maybe someone in your family has the nex XP since when you get a new computer they give it to you automatically. Try asking a good friend or something:D

Simple.
Don't change any settings if it worked before it will work again.
Shut your computer clear OFF
Now Pull the Power Adapter from the back of Verizons Modem. If you have a Router in the mix pull the Power adapter from it as well.
Now wait 5 minutes.
Plug in the adapter for verizons MODEM. and you must wait 1 minute.
If there is a router do the same plug it in and wait 1min.
After your wait you can restart your computer.
After it boots up click on your method to connect and you should be up an runnin .

Power cycle your modem, turn it off for like 15 seconds. It may be your connection though. I get problems now and then that don't let me on for a while and the internet services told me it was their connection problem and not my machine. All my lights will be go on the modem, but it always times out.

Access the Verizon site and check for requirements for DSL. Compare that info (processor speed, RAM, hard disk space) to your PC's info. It wouldn't
hurt to access Device Manager to check the Ethernet info.

The first thing to try is to turn off the power on the modem and then turn it on again. After that, restart your computer.

If the pcs are countless rooms faraway from one yet another, then get a linksys router and one instantaneous receiver. With the 2d computing gadget set up the instantaneous receiver and setup an encrytion gadget on your WAN.

It could be your networking card. Best advice is to call verizon tech and they can tell you in a few minutes. It will be faster and easier.
