Not for some, but I do believe it makes some people think twice before just walking away from a relationship.
Having said that, it is so much easier to get a divorce these days you do rather wonder what the point of getting married is!

You used to have to pay 75p for a dog license, that didn't mean you had to 'marry' the dog, or keep it indefinately,
the same goes for marriage, it's a piece of paper, a license, that says you 'committ' yourself wholely to the sacred vows you make on the day.

In saying that, if you love a person, (and I'm not against marriage) a piece of paper, doesn't change a thing, you can still respect, love and support each other, except when there's a break-up, and then the legality issues crop up, especially when children are involved, issues like ' who gets the dog!', the 45 inch TV, and the mother-in-law !

I'm not married, although when I'm out, people assume we are married, cause we've been together over 20 years,( no we don't share the same colour of anorake) and at times, it's easier to say, "ask my husband", rather than go into the 'partner' thing, but we're happy this way, after all whats mine is mine and whats his is mine also !!!!

Marriage isn't taken seriously enough these days, and that's a shame, but 'living together' is not as a 'taboo' thing as it used to be, and divorce is on the increase, so there you are, it's an individual thing.

Like I said, someone once told me when the days of dog licensing was around, it was easier to hold that kind of license, than it was for a marriage one.

Oh ! and what would all the priests and vicars do, if no-one got wed, they'd be bored silly...

all the best, a friend x

Marriage is a huge mistake. Here are some secrets you should know before you decide anything:

1. There is no Santa Claus
2. Marriage sucks
3. All men cheat
4. Everyone lies (you even lie to yourself)

Good luck and Happy Holidays!!! If you want real answers from a man that doesn't lie anymore email me.

I think some kind of marriage is necessary, simply for legal purposes. If something happens to your significant other, not being married can mess things up a lot, legally, because you will not be considered next of kin.

It's not necessary but it does show the other person you're commited to them. It may be just a piece of paper, but it means a lot for both men and women.

It's not necessary for everyone.

That's why some marriages don't work....they should have stayed single.

Agree agree with 008. I think marriage makes one complacent and lazy. You get taken for granted. The other person just doesn't have the ambition or interest in maintaining the relationship. Then again, I'm speaking for myself here....

To me getting married was always really important as I thought this proves that my partner is totally committed to me. I have since changed my mind as a marriage certificate itself does not keep a relationship together for ever. It is the way we feel about our partner, the way we treat him/her and the way we respect him/her, that keeps a relationship going.

I dont think it is necessary. But it makes many people feel secure to have a bond that is *acceptable* in law and in gods eyes.

sometimes i do and sometimes i don't.. but i do believe a pre nup is necessary.. especially if you have children and a home before you enter into marriage.. you want to make sure the children are taken care of.. and sometimes they will try to brake a will.. but if it is in the pre nup and the will.. that would make it a bit harder
