A sphincter is a structure, usually a circular muscle, that normally maintains constriction of a natural body passage or orifice and which relaxes as required by normal physiological functioning. There are over 40 different sphincters in the human body; some of these sphincters are microscopic in size.

Sphincters consists of circular and longitudinal smooth muscle fibers. They are common through out the body. They function as gates. Here is an example of one that works with the production of bile.

Round, smooth muscle tissue, typically located at ends of tubular organs and responsible for letting things in and out.

There are sphincters in the anus, but also located in varoius places w/in the intenstinal tract. A spincter is also responsible for keepking food that we ingest in our stomachs (the pyloric valve I believe). A leak here can lead to the sensation known as heartburn.

Your anal sphincter is your butt hole and the muscle just inside that shuts off the poop shoot or pushes the poop out. You also have a sphincter inside your chest that stops the stomach acids from going into your throat. I think.... Pretty sure that's where it is... It's been a long time.

"circular muscles" examples: rectal sphincter (controls feces from leaking out), cardiac sphincter (at the top of the stomach, controls stomach content from getting into the esophagus ...which would cause heartburn).

Hope that helps ...my BEST ANSWER!
