Arachnids are NOT a type of insect. That's like saying an amphibian is a type of bird. They're totally different creatures. In response to Crikey a Wild Ski Bum's answer, I'd just like to point out that insects, crustaceans, arachnids, and so on are NOT families, they are classes, a much larger and broader grouping - for example, Mammalia is the class which contains all mammals, whilst one family within that class is Felidae, the family which contains the cats. Each class contains many orders, families, genera and species.

Harvestmen, which are commonly referred to as daddy long-legs spiders are not spiders at all. They are, however, arachnids.
