Well, when the vegetation and trees are killed, the natural habitat and food sources of the wildlife that lives there is taken away and they are forced to move elsewhere, adapt, or die. Typically, trees and vegetation absorb carbon dioxide and excrete waste in the form of oxygen (this is what helps us to breathe). When the trees and vegetation are destroyed, they cannot absorb carbon dioxide anymore, and what's worse is they release a gas called methane, which helps to compound the greenhouse gas effect. Pretty much it is making the planet warmer and causing several different and unpredictable climate changes all over the world.

Trees use carbon dioxide and produce oxygen.
Less trees, more carbon dioxide, less oxygen.
Pretty elementary, eh?
