I am not sure what time period you mean but here is interesting information on the dam in Aswan and what the Nile means to Egypt.

The Nile flooded every year bringing natural irrigation to the Nile Valley. This yearly cycle gave Eqypt an advantage over most of the civilized (or uncivilized world). There was some man made irrigation to go along with it but it was mostly natural. There was some canal building but anything like a modern dam controlling the Nile was impossible, even for the people who built the pyramids.
