I seem to recall that by default Vista does not trust CD's ,, you have to log-in as Admin and specifically tell Vista it's OK to 'read' the CD

Personally I'm an XP fan (although I HATE the default 'autorun' = XP automatically 'runs' any CD I insert (irrespective of whatever virus ridden s/w might be present on it) but at least you can turn off autorun in the Registry for all time, so maybe there is someone out there who has an idea of how to 'fix' Vista ?

Don`t install Norton AntiVirus, please. You hate Vista, I hate Norton.
After installing Norton, your computer will become damn slow.
That stupid NORTON just broked down my PC last month because of using too much memory to scan.
I just ask a computer specialist last Sunday. For Windows Vista, he recommended me to install ESET NOD32 3.0 Antivirus, AVG Anti-Spyware and ZoneAlarm 7.0 Firewall.

http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list.jsp?dc=56pus&ctry=GB&lang=en

go there click "trial on the right"

download / install

u don't say what version of AV it is, prolly an old one.. so if thats the case, won't work

also its not a firewall, you need BOTH

trial zone alarm for 2 weeks

then switch it to free version

but u'll have no anti virus then , so after install avg free also

just download it now, leave it on ya desktop . install it in a few weeks =)

Listen to Linda and Steve up top^. For security reasons Vista does not like to "autorun" CDs...it is way, way more secure and only a little hassle once one gets used to it.

Haha join the club, I hate vista also. (I still run xp and 2000) I also hate norton. (I recommend using AVG anti-virus, it's free and so much better than norton) Anyway, try it on another computer to see if it's your computer or the cd and go from there.

Although it is possible that the drive is faulty, it is more than likely to be a software problem..
The easiest cure would be to backup anything you need to keep, onto a flash drive, and then format and reinstall the operating system and programs..
If the laptop wont boot from the windows disk, then it is probably a hardware fault with the DVD drive.
