Of course the inquisition happened. The Church has never denied it at all. Making restitution to families of victims of evil priests is the charitable and right thing to do and is acknowledging the mistakes of these individuals and the responsibility of the Church to help those who were wronged. However there is revisionist history produced by those who hate the Church. The primary involvement of the Church in the Inquisitions was to stop the brutality of the civil governments and it is the Church through its efforts that finally ended the Inquisitions. People also fail to realize that the Inquisitions were responses to the innocent members of the Church being attacked and murdered. They were an attempt at ending the persecution of the Church members and some individuals went too far out of their passion to end the attacks on the innocent. God bless! In Christ Fr. Joseph

The Inquisition in Spain was to fill the coiffures of the King and Queen. Women who had power or property were charged with witchcraft and burned, tortured, dunked, iron maidened...the money was used to send Columbus to the New World to continue the atrocities on indigenous peoples the met along the way using the injunction that all these people were without souls...the inquisition was a political construct of the Catholic Church. Men were also killed but in far greater numbers...this is where the term ****** comes from because gay men were burned as logs when wood became scarce

The Spanish Inquisition took place in 1492 in Spain. The Spanish monarchs Queen Isabella & King Ferdinand united the kingdoms of Castille & Aragon. They overthrew Grenada and took power back from the Moors (Moors were African Muslim tribes that ruled parts of Spain for over 800 years) The King and Queen gave all Jews living in Spain an ultimatum, convert to Catholicism or leave Spain. Many left Spain for Portugal, Turkey and Holland. Others who refused to convert were burnt at the stake. Some who converted to the King's religion were later tried for "Judaising" and were burnt at the stake. (Judaising means to practice Judaism but pretend to be a Catholic) Many Jews were forced to baptize. The grand Inquisitor at the time was Torquemada. He was murdered. The Church in Spain would torture Jews in the catacombs. There were special instruments used for this torture by the priests. They would steal Jewish children from their families and baptize them and nuns would raise them Catholic. It was very important for these monarchs that Spain was free of Jews and Spain be a Catholic nation. The Jews of Spain at the time were actually an asset to Spain. A Jew named Avraham Zacuto was the best astronomer at the time. He invented the Astrolabe, a device used in medival times to navigate ships...he drew maps for Vasco Da Gama (A Portugese sailor that found many uncharted territories for Portugal. The average Jew in Spain at the time spoke at least three languages. Jews lived in Spain since before Jesus was born. They were translators. merchants, Doctors. In fact, the Dr. to the monarchs was a Jew. Jews tranlated medical texts from Arabic to Spanish and Portugese. The man who set up the union bet the King and Queen was the chief court Rabbi, and an advisor to the monarchs..his name was Rabbi Avraham Senior. The King & Queen used money confiscated from Jews to pay for Christopher Columbuses voyage to the Americas. The Inquisition was very harsh on Jews and Moors. People were burned alive infront of an audience for not converting. Queen Isabella was thought at the time to be a reincarnation of the Virgin Mary. Both monarchs were responsible for the death and displacement of hundreds and thousands of people.

The Inquisiton was established to question the beliefs of Spanish Citizens during the 1400s. It was supposed to ensure the orthodxy of the Catholic regieme. It was begun at the behest of the monarchs, and technically only had jurisdictions over Catholic citizens. However, since Jews and Muslims were supposed to be exiled, pretty much any Spanish citizen was subject to being questioned.

The Spanish Inquisition, I believe, was to get rid of heretics that were there because of their religion.

NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... Our *four*...no... *Amongst* our weapons.... Amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... I'll come in again.
