We got 1 molly a few years ago, she was apparently pregnant because we soon had more molly's. I think she is a molly, she is bright orange with black fins.
Fast forward now to the present, all we have in our tank is molly's currently, our poor little neons died ages ago.
We have a good number of molly's and they keep on breeding. I have noted that we seem to be having some genetic problems (possibly due to inbreeding?). We are getting some really light orange molly's and some that are almost entirely black. We have also had some of the molly's born with weak fins? This only seems to happen on one side, they look kinda like Nemo.
Anyway we would like them to stop breeding so much! Is there a way to do this? We don't want to just flush them, and we don't seem to have a Pet Store locally that will take them. Petsmart and Petco are pretty much the only ones in the area that carry fish. Smaller Pet Stores don't seem to carry fish in this area.

Ahh you are right! They are platties, the orange and black ones.
We like them rather well, but we would like to get some other fish in our tank!
Thank you for letting me know about the septic system, eww I can't imagine not dying right away that would not be very nice even to a fish!

Our tank is actually not heated. It has a light that we keep on during the day, but otherwise it doesn't have a heat source to keep the tank at a steady temp.

Thank you, I am glad the fish are so happy. I suppose I could fix the inbreeding problem by getting a couple of more mollies to add in some genetic diversity.

Those sound more like platies. Look up both species on yahoo images to tell.
Males have a long, thin anal fin. Females have a normal, round shaped anal fin. Seperate them as soon as you can.
Females can also hold fertilized eggs for 6 months and continue having babies without any males in the tank.
Please don't flush live fish. They end up in the septic tank where they live in pain and may not die of the chemical burns and poor conditions for weeks.
Advertise free fish on craigslist.com in your area.
By the way, neon tetras are a very sensitive, high-maintenence species. They need a pH of 5-6 and very warm water. Just the opposite of livebearers, who prefer a high pH of 8-9 and cool water, and even a little bit of salt. The species shouldn't ever be in the same conditions.

Yea, you definately have platies, what you can do is just offer them free to people, there isnt really any way to stop them from breeeding, but to take out the males, and hope you dotn have any pregnant females, but i am not sure which ones are males and females, you would have to go online to google or something and ask how to figure out which is male and female, platies, and mollies do mate alot, and do look very alike you could have mixed breeds of those two

Yeah there relatively is not any thank you to maintain molly from no longer breeding devoid of harming them. the only answer to end the insanity is killing or freely giving the fry. i'm no longer a molly professional, yet i'm gonna assume that they consume their youthful like some livebearers, so which you would be able to shrink your molly inhabitants through letting feeding them most of the fry then killing/ freely giving something later. To kill them i might in simple terms purchase some clove oil, and positioned it in a bucket and positioned the fry in. you additionally can attempt asking the fish save to take them, yet maximum great chain shops do no longer do the variety of ingredient.

You could get another tank, and just separate the males and the females
here is an article on how to sex them if you don't know
http://www.fishlesscycling.com/articles/how_to_sex_your_fish.html
And then you could always add other fish to your tank
Hope that helps
good luck

The most humane way to kill them is to put them in a container of the tank water and put them in the freezer for 24hrs until it is frozen solid.
I'd advertise them at your local shopping centre board or in your local newspaper to try and reduce the numbers. Congrats on having a perfect environment that is making your fish breed so well!

You've got to separate males from females
mollies breed like crazy and they will get deformed from inbreeding. they won't stop on their own. if you really can't stop them, make the water colder if its about 80 degrees.
