it's a line
the "+5" means go up five spaces on the y-axis
the "-2x" is the slope
it means to go down 2 spaces and right 1 space

You have a few options. When given the form y=mx+b as in f(x)= -2x+5, b is the y intercept. This is where the line intersects the y axis, and where x=0. Now solve for the x intercept. by puttine in 0 for y. Graph both points (x intercept and y intercept) and connect them with your line. That is the graph of the line. This works only for first degree functions because otherwise you have parabolas and hyperbolas and all that stuff.
You can either create a table of values, in which you should probably use {-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3} as x values and solve for y. Graph all the coordinates and connect them.
You can also use the equation as the guiding factor. The b value in y=mx+b will give you your y intercept, and the -2 is the slope. Slope= (y2-y1)/(x2-x1), meaning slope is the distance gone up divided by distance gone right. Therefore, we can say that slope equals rise over run. The slope in the equation you gave is -2, or -2/1. This means it goes up -2 and to the right 1, or it goes down 2 and to the right 2. You can take your y intercept of 5, go down 2 and to the right 1 to get to (1,3) and then 2 down and 1 right again to (2,1). Connect the coordinates, and you have a graph.

If you're doing it by hand, the equation is in the form y=mx+b, where m is the slope (-2) and b is the y-intercept (5). Once you draw the x and y-axes, count 5 up on the y-axis and put a point there at (0,5). Remember that slope is "rise over run," so a slope of -2 means that you count 2 down and 1 to the right. Do this from where you put the point for (0,5), put another point there, then draw a straight line that goes through both points. That's it!

For a linear function,
y = mx + c
m = gradient
c = y intercept
when y = 0, the value of x will be the x intercept
Since f(x) = -2x+5
The gradient would be -2, in other words it will be sloping down (top left to bottom right)
The y intercept would be 5, and the x intercept would be 5/2.

disregard davischick, she has to find out about the birds and the bees and what f(x) means. First,you find out what type of function you have. This is a linear function (y=ax+b). The fastest way to graph is the x-intercept, y-intercept method.
The x-intercept is the point where y=0, which occurs when x=2.5,y=0. The y intercept is the point where x=0, which occurs when x=0,y=5. Two points, one line, voila - go forth and graph up a storm.

y = -2x+5
Draw a graph, x is along the bottom, where it says one on the bottom, put 1 into x to get y. y=-2(1)+5 which is 3
put a cross where x=1 and y =3
Then draw a point where you put x=2 so y=-2(2)+5 which i 1
x=2 y =1
then -2(3)+5 which equals -1
x=3 y=-2

Replace the 'f(x)' with 'y' in your graphing program, or in your mind if you're graphing by hand. So your equation would be y=-2x+5

All you are able to do is alternative the numbers for x. Your formula is f(x)=5-3x. as an get jointly huge type a million says f(a million)=5-3x so that you may comprehend that x=a million. so that you comprehend that the answer to volume one is 5-3(a million)=2 (2 is the answer.)
