the whole, 'taking the Lord's name in vain' refers to using any religious name really, Mary, God, Jesus, etc, and using it when angry. (Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain') - they didn't have a name for the Lord then, really, but some prayers refer to 'the Lord our God..' The Lord can now also mean Jesus.. I think if you could replace the holy name with the f-word or s-word, then you're using a religious name as a swear, and therefor taking the Lord's name in vain.. I think as a culture that any mention of a holy name is seen as blasphemous.

if you look in psalms 83: 18 in the king james bible it will tell you his name then decide if you have took it in vain which means to make it worthless?

i got frustrated in a conversation with my mother and said "jesus christ" she hung up on me and hasn't spoken to me since-several days now. as that is quite a relief, i wouldn't say that was in vain...an answer to prayer, rather...
