Go into Engineering! There are old engineers retiring in DROVES and not nearly enough qualified engineers to take their place. But in order to do that, the child has to take algebra by 7th grade.
There is a push by MathCounts to encourage math skills by younger kids to try and fill those engineering slots. They're also pushing for teams from inner cities, home schoolers, and unusual schools (deaf schools for example). But that's just a side note.
For my son, I hope he goes into something he loves. I'd like to leave him a little to be comfortable, and hopefully he would be able to do anything he'd like. We'll see.

Law and then politics. I'm currently planning to go to law school so I will like it if my child or grandchild followed my footsteps.

other- green energy or some sort of recycling. the why is easy- normal energy is based on global-warming petrochemicals. i think those will disappear, so an alternative (photovoltaic and wind power seem most likely candidates to replace them).
recycling because there is a lot of wealth (in the form of lost resources) in what we consume. find a way to mine that wealth, and there will be lots of security and success in that area.

I don't dictate what profession my kids enter. It's strictly their decision.
