Mine is Paulo Coehlo, because the first book I read of his (The Alchemist) Changed my life dramatically, and I always learn something new about myself whenever I read another one of his books =oD

William Faulkner. Because he had the ability to grab you with his first sentence and pull you into his books and not let go until he was ready to. His stream of consciousness writing is riveting. His characters are truly American, and he was a true genius. I love everything about his work. If you have been forced to read A Rose For Emily in school and that is all you know of his work - read more. That story isn't even the tip of the Faulkner iceberg.

If you want contemporary authors, I adore Cormac Mc Carthy. For many of the same reasons. His work is riveting.

They're, Their, There - Three Different Words.

Careful or you may wind up in my next novel.

Neal Stephenson: He writes with flair and intelligence, offers some startling insights into human nature, has scathing wit, pokes wry fun at real life, will always include something historical that you never knew and will somehow inspire you to research it further yourself. For example:
Snow Crash - Sumerian Ancient History, Glossolalia.
Diamond Age - Turing Machines, Nanotechnology.
Quicksilver - Newton, Leibniz, Spinoza, the Enlightenment.

He also has some interesting views on the future, a few of which are gradually being realised around us, most notably in the form of information and communication technology and ethos.

Also, you've got to love a guy who makes the main character a samurai-sword-toting high-speed-pizza-delivery guy who is also one of the best hackers on the planet, and then calls him Hiro Protagonist, and then makes it work.

good thing you said "at the moment" or you would have gotten a LIST of authors...
i just read "the tough coughs as he plows the dough" by Dr. Seuss. yes yes, make fun if you will, but it's actually a book geared towards adults and still has the silly fun-ness of his artwork and rhymes. theodore geisel is a long time favourite of mine, cause anything that makes kids WANT to learn to read is fine with me!

I've become a big fan recently of Mercedes Lackey, Nora Roberts, and Christine Warren. I'm on a bit of a vampire/werewolf/etc. fantasy romance binge.

I read Paulo Coelho, but my favorite author at the moment is Amélie Nothomb (with Péplum and Sulfuric Acid) - she is intelligent, sensible and surprising.

J R R Tolkein because he put so much effort into his books. There is a whole real world and made up languages behind those books.
