I'm wondering why he wouldn't have been one.

This all depends on what side of the fence you sit on. If you were an owner of slaves that ran away and joined an army of slaves controlled by Spartacus, he was most likely considered a criminal for this and killing legionaries of Rome. If you were a slave that escaped to freedom ,even though you may have died for it under Spartacus, he was a hero.

Hero status depends on the observer. For the slaves, he was a hero. For the Roman authorities he was a scumbag revolutionary.

he was a hero...to the slaves....and to other people, he was just a slave....

winners write the history books...massacres are written as "battles" and vice versa.....and his owners wrote that page in history.
