It is the solid form of H2O, and that is one of the essential ingredients in nearly every form of life on this planet. It is a very unique compound because it can appear in three different forms without changing it's chemical or molecular composition: liquid, solid and gas. It has a radical expansion factor in both the solid and gaseous forms. It is not my favorite type of pavement topping, but it is a great topper on the lake for fishing and skating. Ice is simply another wonderful miracle and gift from a kind and loving Heavenly Father.
