V.C. They're very rare, awarded ony for exceptional valour courage under fire and actions beyond the call of duty (all at once), the feats that have won them before are truly incredible (look up Isandhwana, or watch Zulu for an example)and I'm a Brit. Obvious really.

The Victoria Cross.
The VC is harder to win than the Medal of Honour, which in turn is harder to win than the Knights Cross or the Hero of Soviet Union.

I was not in WW II, and I have not been in combat. But I was told by a decorated Master Sergeant (he had a DSC with leaves) that the medal he was most proud to wear was the Combat Infantry Badge, given for facing continual small arms fire for at least 12 hours.
The highest US award, the Medal of Honor, has in recent conflicts been mostly given posthumously. I don't think I would have an opinion at that point.

many of the awards are awarded posthumously, So I'd rather have the one I live through. My Grandfather's best friend won the CMH in WW1 and spent the rest of his short life in the VA hospital. He died at about 50, shot 6 or so times is not a long life span. his name was Nelson Miles Holderman, and he never slept another night without nightmares til he died, on further thought, no thanks you keep the awards, I'll take peace.
