The overwhelming majority of people are automatons--that is, they are robot-like. They are not original persons with free will; they are personalities formed by circumstance and conditioning and act and react according to habits and conditioning. The spiritual quest--in whatever path, philosophy, or religion--is essentially an effort to discover what reality is beneath the artificial person.
