If you smell it INSIDE the car strongly.

if the smell is inside of the car real strong, then it could be the heater core leaking on it,a very small amount of anti freeze will make one smell like its a lot more than it is,id keep a check on the coolant to be sure, and its possible she could be right,it could be a head gasket bad on it,have a shop check this, the can tell you for sure what it is,good luck on it.

Your car has the K series engine which is fitted to MG's, Rovers and Freelanders. Headgaskets on Freelanders are known to blow at 30k miles, Rovers and MG's about 60k miles. You will need a new modified gasket and head skim, cost about £600. The new gasket will still blow but should last longer than the original. This engine is known to be a total load of rubbish, the V6 2 litre and the Diesel do not suffer the same problems.

Feel the carpet on the passenger side foot-well all the way forward till the carpet stops. If you feel dampness it's the heater core leaking.

it is possible you might want to check the exost tip pipes when you have the engine running and if you see white vapor smoke it means that most likely you will need to replace a head gasket.

your coolant could be leaking out someplace and the engine burning it off. if its a headgasket your car would have a milky looking oil on the dip stick and your car would be burning white smoke.
