A few weeks ago my beta fish was floating on the top of his tank. I thought he was dead and went to open the lid and he was alive it was quite a shocker. Anyway, when ever I see him he is floating but when I open the tank to feed him he swims around the tank. I watched him for a while and noticed that it is when he is idle that he starts to float up, left side up always. I know he is 2-1/2 years old but 3 months ago I bought a frog and put him in the tank with the beta. The beta and frog actually get along and do not bother one another, which is great. I don't know if anyone out there knows what maybe wrong with him. Thank you!

It sounds like swimbladder disease

Fast him for at least 5 days, and cut back on feedings

also once you start feeding him again, fast him for 1 whole day outa the week, which will prevent constipation and therefore swimbladder disease

Hope that helps
good luck

My first betta fish did this and his fins also looked like they were decaying. I brought it to PetSmart and the guy said it is noraml for Betta fish to do this. But there is a way to stop it. First, make sure there is enough room for the fish to reach the surface (where there is a lot of air) and second, he gave me this powder that dissolved in the water and for a month or so I had to put the powder in there. When it was done, my fish never floated like that. Just tell a person at you local pet store about the problem and they should give you these supplies. They cost less the 2 dollars (when I did it). Good Luck!

Normally if hes floating that means hes going to die soon...when my beta's started acting like that they died in less than a week. it might also just be a way to get the frog away from it. Fetal position anyone?

My bettas, do that, but they don't live with frogs.
I have three females, all in separate large areas.
They will either float to the top and look dead or sink to the bottom and Really look dead and it scares me each time. I feed them and they are up and going and enjoying their food. I think they are either sleeping or playing jokes on me.
If your betta is eating and moving normally, I wouldn't worry.

beta fish dont like having other nimals in their tank, he may be responding to the frog, take the frog out and see if that solves the problem.
