A transitive verb has a direct object that it does something to.
Jim kicked the ball. verb: kicked. direct object: the ball. Therefore the verb is transitive.
If there is only an indirect object, it is intransitive. She waved at me. verb:waved indirect object: at me. She waved her stick at me. Verb: waved. direct object: her stick. indirect object: at me. Hope this helps.
