Because it's old as in elder....The antonym of elder or older is younger, which is why children are called young, not new.

How old are you, 13?

Yes, some people use the term "old people" when discussing the elderly but there are also many who use the term "young people" when referring to children.

I find myself referring to the elderly as old and I don't know why because I'm 72 , but I don't feel as old as they look until I look in the mirror.

To me the young children are the little people and I love those little people.

They are still innocent and they are just a lot of fun to be around.

Thanks for the question.

They pretty much have shown that in many ways, aging is like turning back into an infant. Why is it you can kiss and hug and eat soggy corn curls from an infant.....but you can't from an elderly person? Helping a wobbly toddler is cute but helping an elderly person is "disgusting"? A stubborn infant is appreciated....a stubborn senior is a pain in the ***.

I was in the suoermarket recently when a young Mum came past with a very new born baby, I said to my wife that looks very new, the Mum heard me and said, "yes they are on special offer in the other aisle" I wasn't sure if she was cross with me or not.

LOL!!

Children, are simply "children."
No matter what age they are.

I don't hear too many people called "old people," unless there is a great deal of disrespect.

I cant answer any differently than the answers you have already received......
But I can add that I have heard some Mums who come into our shop say to another customer..."Hows the new baby doing"....that always makes me smile because I have never seen any old babies....except perhaps my hubby when he has a bad cold.....
Cheers...

Just a question of semantics. Besides the term new people would indicate a different kind of human. Not the same as other humans, new.
