No such thing as a website I "can't live without."
I never use generic templates, since I create ALL my designs to fit the client's specific needs. That's why my clients HIRE a professional designer. If they wanted a template, they could look one up for themselves and fill in the blanks.
Whether one done by me, or some other pro, clients will get a piece that is unique and fits their profile like no template can. For example, if my client needs a magazine ad for his custom motorcycle shop, it should reflect his business, and not work in the same way as my other client's ad for her quilt shop. A flyer does not work the same way as a poster and neither of these layouts would be suitible for a postcard.
The other bad thing about templates is that they LOOK like templates. They HAVE to be bland, general purpose layouts to fit all kinds of different needs. Plus, some of the more popular template sites and software have been so over used, that I begin to recognize the templates and can often tell, exactly, where they come from.
As far as places to post work, it should depend on the designer's needs. At this point in MY career, protecting my copyrights is more important than boosting my bragging rights. My online portfolio is only available to potential clients, who are given the url with the understanding that they will not be downloading my designs and posting them on their "my space" pages. I use other forms of advertisement, including regular, direct mail campaigns using fresh designs, often catering to certain kinds of clientele.
The only site I "can't live without" is Yahoo Answers, and that is because I am thoroughly addicted to it.
