What are advantages of using a stain on a specimen?

You can see the cells better. In gram stain you can see if it is gram positive- pink color or gram negative- purple color. You can see the morphology of the cell, rod or cocci,etc.. There is also negative stains,( acid fast stain). Without staining you would not know al ot of charachteristics about the cell.

So you get better contrast between different structures within the cells.
