Although Mazdas have a basic fuel filter on the pump in the tank, there should be an in line filter between the tank and the engine. Usually with electric pumps, the filter is under the car and near the tank. Because Mazda went with the the Ford type filter connections, changing them are a pain in the ***. The older models had the fuel filter in the engine compartment. Go to a parts store and get an idea of what the filter looks like, then check both the engine compartment (near the brake master cylinder) and under the car near the back. Good luck.
