"Art... has nothing to do with understanding how the world works. To pretend that it does is to trivialise science and do nothing for art. We should stop pretending that the two disciplines are similar, and instead rejoice in the very different ways that they enrich our culture." Lewis Wolpert

We like to divide our lives up into handy little parcels - this one art, this one cookery, this one science, this one carpentry. It makes it easier to deal with things that might otherwise overwhelm us and provides convenient boundaries for learning. There are differences between science and art and there are similarities.
Contrary to that Wolpert says, it could be argued that both art and science offer ways of understanding our world and of communicating aspects of it to others. Scientific principles may underpin art, whether the mathematical formulae for the representation of perspective or the chemistry of the materials with which the 'art' object is formed. What about the work of cranial reconstruction sculptors who can reconstruct a face from a bare skull? Science or art or both? What about the music on your iPOD. It may be art but would not exist without the science of the recording techniques, the science of audio compression (to make it MP3 compliant) and the science of data transmission so you could down load it. Leonardo Da Vinci would, I suspect, not have differentiated between art and science.
It could be said that science is an international language since the principles hold true anywhere on earth (and elsewhere as far as we know). Provided we understand the language, Science gives us a structured way to understand natural processes. Art gives us a less formally structured way that may be less universal (images may have special meaning within a particular community). So, are art and science different forms of communication that are able to be used to analyse and represent different aspects of life? I choose to think so.

I agree with Lewis - science is essentially about discovering how the world works.

Just because some fields like medicine employ both art and science as their medium doesn't mean the two disciplines are similar.

However saying they are linked is another matter altogether. You need to make a clearer distinction.

I disagree. This statement totally disregards color theory, and many techniques of making art which are scientific in nature. They are inextricably linked. In fact, if you check on Amazon, you can find a book called the "Science of Art".
Does this Lewis Wolpert not notice the beauty of nature, which makes sense scientifically, yet is the essence of artistic inspiration? He doesn't seem to realize that all things in the universe are part of the whole.

Wolpert is wrong. Although I understand his point. He is suggesting that art is all about imagination and creativity, and never about rules or structure.

It's false because the very products of science are used in art. Art can be used to celebrate or combat a position of science. Art can help promote a question within science. Yesterday's science fiction is today's science.

They are distinctive disciplines, but they are connected and can compliment each other.

Just my opinion.

I agree that both enrich culture, but I can't agree that they are separate disciplines, or that putting the two together trivialises either one.

try being a scientist without being creative/imaginative or an artist without being scientific. It doesn't work very well, I guess it's possible, but won't produce good work for either.
