It could be argued that it was the rugged tough individuals that settled these colonies as a free settlers, brought their character with them. These people were unique in their homelands, brought these qualities with them but were no longer unique.

As areas were settled the 'settled areas' became fit for others who followed. However it was the settlers who set the tone of what the colonies would be like.
