Eisenhower, lazy? What are you people? Stupid?

Eisenhower was the third best prez in the post WW2 era--behind Reagan and Nixon, and above Truman.

He manuevered between the hawks of the Repubs and Dems (yes, Dems used to be interested in national security). He tried to limit the unnecessary military growth. As a military man, even he struggled to bring reason to the cold war hysteria.

He quietly worked to develop missile technology, taking the public relations hit of sputnik in stride. He saw the possibility of landing a man on the moon, but did not want to spend billions of dollars for a public relations campaign. He pushed through the interstate highway program. Admittedly, part of the reason was military. In the WW1 era, he saw the difficulty of moving troops cross country on the poor quality and unreliable highways of the day--but he also spurred great economic development.

While he was not in favor of rapid desegration, forseeing the social upheaval and riots of the 60s, he stood by the court decision in Brown and sent troops into Little Rock (against the Dem governor) to protect the black students on campus.

His greatest mistake was sending U2 missions over the Soviet Union before the major disarmament summit. The summit failed amid Soviet denouncements, and the possibility of disarmament Eisenhower had worked for was lost.

Eisenhower was a hand-on president, deeply involved in all areas of public policy. If he projected a laissez-faire attitude, it was to keep the nation calm. He was one of the greatest, and most effective, presidents of the 20th century.

Damn RKO, good list, both of them.

Ike was honest, though a bit too trusting, in the Dulles brothers and the CIA, he knew things were going awry but all he could do was warn us.

How far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without?

I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Here in America we are descended in blood and in spirit from revolutionists and rebels - men and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine. As their heirs, may we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion.
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

He was the President all the way through my grammar school years. Yes, he was pretty good. Remember, he had a bad heart attack halfway through that slowed him down. But since he was the Supreme Allied Commander in WWII, he knew all the best people to form his cabinet.

My favorite thing he did? Probably build the interstate highway system. And make sure that the US was always the world's strongest military power, without using it. Good guy, Ike.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower was the only President to say no to the Israeli lobby and he was hated for it.

In all honesty,no. He didn't do anything but play golf. Stephenson would probably have made the best president of all times, but it wasn't what our county was looking for. We wanted someone like Ike who won a lot of awards and was a hero. He made us fee safe and that's all we needed at that time

He was a bit lazy, but he was better than any of the Republicans who followed him.
