I drive about 50 miles one way to work, and this other day, I smelled something burning when I got home, checked and found that the engine oil is very low. The gasket for the oil filter was worn and caused a leaked. Anyways, I filled up 2 qts of oil before it hit the minimum level. The check engine light never came on.. is it suppose to come on.. and if so, is there a way to test the light to make sure it is working.

Low oil level won't make the check engine light come on, but the oil pressure light. The only thing you can do is check to see if the bulb on the dash is out by turning the key on, and if the bulb is good you should have the car check.

The red oil pressure warning light should have come on with the oil that low. The check engine light is for the computer run engine controls and does not monitor the oil level. Turn the key so that the dash lights come on, don't start the motor. The oil pressure warning light should be on and then go out when you start the car. If not the oil pressure sending unit could be bad or else the wire to the sending unit might be corroded. The bulbs very seldom burn out. The check engine light should also light up with the other dash indicator lights with the key on but motor not started. It will turn off after you start the car unless another problem exists, in which case a scan tool would be needed to read the codes set in the computer.

it will not come on in this situation, another light would come on if you did not have enough oil (low oil level light). Usually, a check engine light will come on if you're 02 sensor is bad, experiencing severe know, an injector is bad, knock, misfire, etc... If it didn't come on, no harm was done to your engine (just probably a lil low on oil). That burning smell is most likely caused by the oil leaking out of the filter and being burned off by the engine. no biggie, it'll just leave a stain
