Because it is trying to call his/her friends to rescue her/him!?
I don't like when I see birds in a cage, they should be flying out there, making the world a beautiful place, more than it already is! Birds should be free!!!

Check out this baby laughing? So funny, you won't stop laughing either!

If you are speaking about a literal caged bird, I'd say because they don't realize what life would be like beyond their cage ...or perhaps they're dreaming about what it is like on the other side of the cage.

If you are speaking of Maya Angelo's book, Angelo felt like a "caged bird" as a child...she felt oppressed by her race and gender. She had a son and as she learned to accept him and the events leading to her pregnancy she began to fell less oppressed, and more in control of her own destiny.

I'd say the caged bird singing may be a metaphor of hope in the midst of trials..that in the end there is acceptance and freedom, physically and emotionally.

She's so sad:

"She's only a bird in a gilded cage,
A beautiful sight to see.
You may think she's happy and free from care,
She's not, though she seems to be.
'Tis sad when you think of her wasted life
For youth cannot mate with age;
And her beauty was sold
for an old man's gold,
She's a bird in a gilded cage."
