I live in Toronto so the reason that they wear it because they live in the city is NOT AN OPTION.

No one hit the nail on the head so I'm going to give you the full answer. I'm from NYC, live in Florida and have been all over the east coast. My best friend grew up in California so I have a wide base of understanding on this subject.
The hat (and other team's) hats are worn by people for a number of reasons. 1) They are fans of the team. 2) They are from that area 3) It matches the clothes they are wearing at the time 4) Gang relations
Having been in a gang myself I understand this. Having grew up on the streets of NYC I know that many black men wear caps to match their outfits since they are very color aware. when I see people wear Boston caps I yell at them "Go Yankees!!" and 90% of people in those caps say "What? I'm not even a Red Sox fan, I just think the hat looks cool."
It's simply marketing. Americans are fragile people who can't think for themselves. You could put something representing the KKK on a cool logo and stylish hat and w/ the right commercials people would buy it and never figure it out. It's really sad today, but that it the main reason you see people wearing those hats. It simply looks cool to them.

The New York Yankees caps are popular, that's true, but many people from New York City aren't the Yankees fans; a few are Yankees fans. They only wear the NY that stand for New York that shows where they are come from. Boston are similar to New York that where people are come from.

That's part of it, definitely. It is a cool look.
The main reason is because the Yankees are the paragon of greatness in major-league caliber team sports. Having more World Series Championships than anyone else will ever win also helps. :)
Part of the Red Sox popularity is that they are the only real rival the Yankees have in the A.L. Once again, it all get back to the Yankees and their insurmountable all-time greatness. . . .

It's likely Manchester United shirts or jerseys.Soccer is the biggest sport in the world (by far) and Man U is to soccer what the Yankees are to baseball.

People use the NYY cap to show that they're from NY.
Also, they just have a huge amount of fans, as do the Boston Red Sox.

It is true that some gangs use them as symbols for example the Dodgers hats and Royals are used by gangs so in NY they are also used by gangs.
