Yes, it will! Especially if your using Vista. Vista eats up a lot of memory just running the OS alone, and since you're into gaming 8GB of RAM is highly recommended for you!

it would depend upon the processor but i would say that it would most definitely make a difference. vista is very greedy when it comes to memory usage, and the newer games out there have recommended ram levels of 1 GB. so the more you can afford, because in the end that is what it comes down to, and the more your system board will hold the better. a good video card, one with at least 256MB wouldn't hurt either. a good gaming system would have at least a 3-4 GHz processor quad core Pentiums come to mind, 500GB hard drive, 4GB ram and a 6 channel sound card would be a very decent gaming system. but i digress, i hope i have answered your question. have fun and shoot a couple of aliens for me.

32-bit Operating Systems can only read around 3.5 GB worth of RAM. If you are using 32-bit Vista, 8GB will be a complete waste of your money.
There were ways around it in XP, but they generally reduce system stability and I beleive M$ may have removed the functionality in SP1.
If you have the 64-bit, it can handle over 8GB (128GB I beleive?), I could be wrong, its a high number.
