I use both CCleaner and Advanced Windows Care.
If you care to do some additional reading, here are reviews with links to several other free registry cleaners:

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Personally I would not trust a free registry cleaner that much. I downloaded Uniblue's Registry Booster and very happy with it. Being a Microsoft Gold Partner, I prefer such companies. You can try their free scan at http://www.liutilities.com/products/registrybooster/ if not mistaken.

Sure. Go to www.majorgeeks.com
It says whether they are freeware, shareware, trial etc. I used to use Lexun RegScrubXP. It was good and it works for Windows XP, but I have upgraded to Kubuntu, so I no longer need a registry scrubber. It is at www.kubuntu.org

I've been using it for 3 months with good results.

Also takes care of temp files and your start up programs.
