I have finished my Cisco CCNA and want to get into the security side of things with a view to being a security consultant.. which do you think would be best to do next - CompTIA Security + or the Cisco CCSP???

Or any other suggestions : )

I'd do both in that order. The CompTIA will give you a basic understanding of the concepts and make digesting the Cisco curriculum MUCH easier.

Do keep in mind that in any IT area, the technology changes daily. And in the security arena not only does the technology change but the crackerz and malware authors are continuously honing their "craft." Any security cert is ONLY a starting point. You MUST constantly stay on top of emerging threats and be as proactive as possible to be useful as a security consultant.

And as always, a cert might get you into an entry level position, but the big bucks are reserved for those with experience and a proven track record. This is true anywhere in IT but is even more so in Security.

Since the security+ exam took me less than 10 minutes to take, I would say that if you know nothing about security that would be an OK place to start.. especially since all comptia certs are good for life so you don't have to re-take the exams.

However, if you are truly serious then you will not stop there and should definitely consider moving onto the CCSP and of course the de facto standard in security certifications the CISSP

I would also recommend you get in a few SANS courses under your belt and some solid work experience.

Good Luck

CCSP has more clout than CompTIA's Security+ and is also harder
